Mary Magdalene showed bold faith as she witnessed Christ’s resurrection and brought the glad tidings to His followers. Mary once was a woman who had a very bad reputation, but then she met Jesus and all that changed. The Bible shows us a woman who is totally devoted to following Jesus. She is shown to have a pure heart and flawless character. But despite how the Bible shows her, she still had to live with those who knew her when. When she had fallen, when she was controlled by evil, when she hadn’t met her Savior. Mary stuck to Jesus, even when it seemed like all was lost. She stayed there as Jesus was put in the tomb and the large stone was rolled in front. She returned early to prepare His body and found the tomb empty. She ran to share the good news with His followers.
Some wonder at Mary’s courage and strength. And while she did have those qualities, I propose that Mary’s boldness comes from her deep love of her Savior. Mary left all comfort behind to follow Jesus. She was beyond grateful for all He had done for her. Her whole life was focused on Jesus. I don’t think that in light of that love, that other’s opinion of her mattered much. Mary’s gratitude to Jesus for her salvation overflowed as great devotion to Him.
We can be the same as Mary Magdalene, our gratitude can and should lead to a great devotion to God. Our eyes should be fixed so firmly on Christ, that the rest of the world fades into the background. Nothing should matter more to us than pleasing Him. Nothing should distract us from living for Him. Nothing should stand in the way of us living a life that declares His goodness to everyone we meet.
How do we develop that kind of love and devotion to Christ? Just like Mary Magdalene did. We know where He saved us from. We get to know Him through regular prayer and Bible study. We live with Him. We eat and drink and walk with Him. We allow Him to become the biggest part of our lives as we go about our day. As our knowledge and gratitude toward all He has saved us from grows, it will overflow from our lives as devotion to Him. Our devotion will show others His love and bring them to Him as well.
So let’s get to know our Lord and Savior and live life with a boldness that honors and glorifies God.
